Former Johnnie found dead in accidental drowning

On April 17, autopsy reports confirmed that the body found in Goose Lake in White Bear Lake, Minn. was that of former SJU student, Nick Rossini.

The body was found that Monday, four months to the day after he disappeared.

Rossini, 21, disappeared Dec. 17, 2006, the day after he crashed his mother’s car and was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving.

He had left early that morning without any indication as to where he was going, according to authorities.

For months, Rossini’s family held out hope that Nick would return.

White Bear Lake police believe that Rossini was out for a morning run when he fell through the ice and drowned.

Rossini was found in his running gear, which included a St. John’s T-shirt.

VT shooting activate changes

The shooting deaths of 33 students at Virginia Tech last week have triggered concerns about security on campuses nationwide.

 

“We’re looking at our whole policy,” CSB Campus Security Director Jim Schumann said. “We’re looking at the same issues that other schools are looking at right now.”

Campus Question: Finals scheduling blues

Q: Why are there only three days of finals with a shortened break between final sessions?

The old schedule allowed a full hour between final times and now there is only a half hour. – Matt Haider

 

A: The reason for shortening the schedule from four days to three was to make up for the days school was not held on Scholarship and Creativity Day and Benedictine Education Day, said Julie Gruska, the CSB/SJU Registrar.

SBS president-elect resigns

New Senate President -elect Angela Tate submitted her resignation to the SBS Wednesday.

“We are looking in the bylaws and working with past president Gjerstad to figure out what exact process we will take,” Public Relations Representative Marnie Anderson said.

Vice President Joal Reeves will assume the position until selection of a new St. Ben’s Senate president is selected.

Election fraud

Ballot tampering investigation specifics will not be released.

According to Senate Administrative Advisor Jody Terhaar, CSB has an institutional policy in place that protects the privacy of the person who tampered with the ballots.

Student to present research on Capitol Hill

For a second consecutive year, a CSB student will present research in Washington, D.C.

Senior Lindy Watanaskul will present her poster, titled “Ageing Effects on Heart Rate and Heart Arrhythmia in Drosophila melanogaster (fruit flies)” at the 11th annual Council on Undergraduate Research’s “Posters on the Hill” event April 25 at the Rayburn House Office Building.

Watanaskul is one of approximately 80 students from across the country who will display their research on 60 posters at the event. She was selected from 394 posters that the CUR received for review.

Celebrating scholarship

The seventh annual Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day is Saturday, April 28 at CSB and SJU.

Over 200 CSB/SJU students will give presentations on their scholarship or creative work.

The presentations include talks, posters, artistic displays or performances. Many of them are Honors Thesis presentations, some are pieces the students developed themselves because of their interest in the subject, and some are research works-in-progress in collaboration with faculty members.

Dance and music presentations will take place Friday, April 27. The CSB/SJU Student Film Festival will be in Pellegrene Auditorium Friday and visual art will be on display April 28 at the Gorecki Gallery at CSB.

Tupa’s work on display

The Local blend will host an artist’s reception for SJU chaplain and world-renowned painter Jerome Tupa, OSB tonight at 5:30.

Tupa will discuss his current works, titled “The Road to Compostella” and sign books of his art.

Tupa’s next show is in Naples, Fla. in February 2008, where his work will be shown in conjunction with works by Pablo Picasso.

 

 

Poet laureate visits CSB

Donald Hall wrote his first poem when he was twelve years old.

At the age of 14, the U.S. poet laureate says he was certain it was his calling.

“I was interested in girls and I was a lousy athlete,” Hall told the Alumnae Hall crowd Tuesday. “I would go up to girls and say one short sentence, like ‘Dead people don’t like olives,’ trying to be peculiar. It hardly ever worked.”

Senate Updates

Regent Nicholas Truso sent an admonishing letter to President Kevin May before Easter.

The letter criticized the outgoing president for his actions surrounding the student body vote on a constitutional amendment that rearranged several SJS board positions and names.

Specifically, Truso accused May of sidestepping SJS constitutional procedures in presenting the amendment to the student body the morning of the vote.

CSB dancer choreographs to words

For CSB senior Kyle Gerhart, the dance studio is her sanctuary.

“One of my favorite things in the world is being … in the dance studio,” she said. “I’m in my element.”

Gerhart, sophomore Ashley Artmann, juniors Katie Neisen and Allie Seifert and seniors Katie Carlson and Katie Zabinski demonstrated two dances March 14 as part of Benedictine Education Day. They will present the pieces as part of the CSB/SJU theater department’s show “Inside Out” that opens at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
