Campus Question: Finals scheduling blues

Q: Why are there only three days of finals with a shortened break between final sessions?
The old schedule allowed a full hour between final times and now there is only a half hour. – Matt Haider
A: The reason for shortening the schedule from four days to three was to make up for the days school was not held on Scholarship and Creativity Day and Benedictine Education Day, said Julie Gruska, the CSB/SJU Registrar.
To make up for those days off, the calendar committee discussed removing the study day preempting finals week or one of the other free days in the semester, but decided against it after the student representatives protested, according to Gruska.
As for the shortened breaks between classes, the calendar committee decided to take this approach after they saw classes stretch too late into the evening.
“We used to have three days’ worth of exams and they ran much later in the evening,” Gruska said. “This year the recommendation from the committee was we shorten the period.”
