Guster, O.A.R., Ben Folds, Fred Savage and the Unbeatables and Everclear are just a few of the bands who have graced the stage at Pinestock, and on Saturday, SJU student band The Wagon Wheels will enjoy the same honor.

The Wagon Wheels is a band of junior SJU students that formed only two months ago, but already they’ll have the chance to perform in front of more than 1,300 people.

I saw you

April 26th, 2007 by  Amy Zimmermann

Compiled by Amy Zimmermann

We’ve seen you in the black box and on the Gorecki stage. We’ve seen you hang the lights and paint the set. We’ve seen you play the selfish mother and play the cruel corporal. You’ve made a world with your camcorder and let us help. You’ve taught us something about theater. You’ve taught us something about life. For that, we thank you. Contact record@csbsju.edu.

‘Guitar Hero’ provides amateur performances

April 26th, 2007 by  Chris Orcutt

By Christ Orcutt

My fingers are bleeding.

No, it’s not because I trapped them in a bike chain as I did in the third grade.

It’s just that I can’t tear myself away from Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Free Bird,” Lamb of God’s “Laid to Rest” or Guns’ N’ Roses’ “Sweet Child of Mine.”

Even as I write this, I struggle to pull away from the finger-fret-frenzy of Avenged Sevenfold’s “Beast” and “The Harlot.”

Expert difficulty, why must you thwart my efforts?

After months of anticipation, Red Octane finally unleashed “Guitar Hero II” for the Xbox 360. So you think you can rock?

Students should reconsider the greatness of America

April 26th, 2007 by  Jennifer Mattson

By Andy Kleinendorst

I was more or less disheartened to read such one-sided ideas in the column, “America: Love it or leave it.”

As a citizen of “the greatest country in the world,” I feel it’s my patriotic duty to dissent. I love the idea of America. I love the idea of a nation where everyone is inherently equal and where opportunities are abundant.

I love the idea of a true meritocracy. For the record, I am virulently opposed to the deluded and fictional idea of America as displayed in the opinion piece.

I can only wonder if Kurt Sorensen even bothered to look at factual evidence contrary to his claims. This country is far superior to many countries, but I would never go as far to call it “the greatest country in the world.”

CSB/SJU make the world a better place

April 26th, 2007 by  Jennifer Mattson

Dear Editor,

These campuses need to clean up their language, now.

In a response to the firing of Don Imus for racial slurs, I have decided not to be a person who stands by and says, “Well, what can you do?”

We can all participate in making this world a more peaceful place, and it starts right here at CSB/SJU, or even closer, in your own hearts and mouths.

Battles are begun because men and women have a certain hate against a “different” kind of person or group. This starts with offensive language at a Catholic Benedictine college. We must not say such hurtful phrases.

Columinsts adopt inclusive worldviews

April 26th, 2007 by  Jennifer Mattson

Dear Editor,

Kurt Sorensen’s article last week titled “America: Love it or leave it” led me to question whether Sorensen and the real world are even tangentially connected with each other.

The article was a regurgitation of the simple-minded, sound-byte rhetoric that the media uses to strip an issue of all its substance and reduce our opinions to gut reactions in which facts have no bearing.

Students, voice your opinion, improve college education and complete the “Nessie”

April 26th, 2007 by  Jennifer Mattson

by Kim Oren

What matters most in the undergraduate experience?

What truly constitutes institutional quality?

Collegiate ranking systems, some of which are widely familiar, focus on relatively tangential and indirect criteria pertaining to institutional resources and reputation and characteristics of students before they start college.
