A course at CSB/SJU is using communication to make a difference.
Students in Organizational Communication are developing a relationship with Habitat for Humanity by bringing the first building project to St. Joe. They break ground Oct. 18.
The class of 12 students has divided into three groups with specific goals. Four students make up three groups with different focuses.
The finance committee will raise money for the project. The St. Joe build committee will focus on the actual construction, and the volunteer recognition committee will acknowledge the organizations volunteers.
Together, the three committees are working with Habitat for Humanity to bring the project to St. Joe.
Junior Sarah Larson is hopeful the community will be strengthened by the project.
“It’s cool that it’s happening in St. Joe,” Larson said.
One of the project’s goals is to build the gap between St. Joe and CSB/SJU, Larson said.
Junior Maria Melcher is a part of the finance committee.
“It’s a lot of class hours, but it’s really interesting and really exciting,” Melcher said.
Construction will begin after the groundbreaking, break for the winter and then finish in the spring, Melcher said.
All students are encouraged to assist with office work, fundraising and construction for the project.
“It’s kind of a unique opportunity. I hope students get involved,” Melcher said.
This Friday and Saturday, a brat sale at the farmer’s market will help raise funds for the project.
