‘Good Samaritan’ helps students

February 14th, 2008 by  Tan Tuohy

Dear Editor,

In last week’s editorial, Josh Novacheck wrote a letter expressing dissatisfaction with CSB/SJU’s lack of a “Good Samaritan” policy, which would exempt students from receiving alcohol-related infractions in the event of reporting a medical emergency.

I wholeheartedly agree with his opinion on this matter. I have witnessed many instances on our campus in which students have been at serious risk of alcohol poisoning.

I know an alcohol write-up shouldn’t deter students from contacting emergency services, but it really does play a part in their decision-making. Students not only do not want to get themselves in trouble, but they also don’t want to get their friends in trouble either.

Making a difference means more than just voting

Election fever is everywhere. It dominates the headlines of every newspaper, from the New York Times to The Record. The caucuses last week generated excitement as hundreds of people waited in lines to vote.

The chance to experience democracy firsthand was exhilarating. However, others were disappointed by the poor logistics or by their perceived lack of choice in candidates. Now, for both of these groups, the big question is now “Where do we go from here?”

It’s true that some people will go on to senate, district or even statewide and national conventions. Others may volunteer for campaigns or get out the vote efforts. But, let’s say none of these options apply to you.

Cold toes, warm heart

February 14th, 2008 by  Tan Tuohy

By Jolene Brink

I woke up Saturday morning and growled at the temperature.

My legs were itching for a run, but the rest of my body said, “Absolutely not. You are not going outside.”

The thought of running with snot icicles hanging from my nose and frost around my eyelashes brought the covers back over my head.

When I finally got up and glanced at the calendar, I let out another groan.

250 students to fight cancer one lap at a time

February 14th, 2008 by  Tan Tuohy

cancelistMore than 250 CSB/SJU are spending their Saturday night walking laps to fight for a cause.

The annual “Night to Fight Cancer” takes place at 5 p.m. in the HCC fieldhouse.

Students are raising money to help realize the wishes of a young boy named Hunter to travel to Disneyworld, said sophomore Heather
Cederholm, who is part of the event’s organizers, the Health Advocates.

Wishes cost about $10,000, she said. The CSB/SJU students walking laps Saturday are hoping to raise enough to cover this cost.

No ducks? What’s next?

Conservation in this state is at a critical point.

The thing that has always bothered me about critical points is that we can’t do anything to them.

We can’t change them in any way. We can’t make a maximum into a minimum or a minimum into a point that is neither. Thank God conservation is not a math problem.

Going into this legislative season, Minnesota faces a monumental decision.

Conservation in the state, including clean water issues, protection of sensitive and valuable habitat and a myriad of other issues, needs to be addressed.

CSB SOFTBALL COACH DOES DOUBLE DUTY

February 14th, 2008 by  Tan Tuohy

Denny JohnsonBy Tom Mix

Denny Johnson has been balancing two coaching schedules at St. Ben’s for 22 years, and at this time of year, he is trying to divide his time equally.

Johnson serves as the Blazer softball coach and also is an assistant basketball coach. Last week, the softball team started indoor practices. As a result, Johnson’s schedule got a little more chaotic with basketball preparing for the MIAC playoffs, but he isn’t letting the time crunch get to him.

“Because I’ve been doing it for 22 years it’s accepted,” Johnson said. “The schedule we have in place works out fairly well.”

Both the St. Ben’s and St. John’s swimming and diving teams are ready for this weekend’s MIAC Championship at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.

Last weekend was the Minnesota Challenge for swimmers who were not on the conference team.

“It’s a chance for people to finish off their season,” said St. Ben’s coach Kathy Walker.

Many Blazers dropped time off their events, which gives Walker confidence about the women’s performances this weekend.

Two-a-day practices at 6 a.m. and 4:15 p.m. have become a regular occurrence for the athletes on the
St. John’s Wrestling team as they prepare for postseason competition.

With all the mental preparations and physical conditioning, the Johnnies appear to be primed for a run in the NCAA tournament, but any wrestler on the team would tell you it’s not that easy.

Before they can even begin to worry about the national wrestling scene, the Johnnies must first earn their spot in the national tournament by winning at the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional Tournament, which will be held at 9 a.m. Feb. 23 in Collegeville.

Artist of the week: Danny Vitali

dannyv1Artist Statement

Crayon art, a commonly overlooked medium of art, provies a great avenue of self expression, a nice way to spend time with close amigos and a prime
opportunity to kick it old school. Crayon art is all about expressing joy, evoking emotion and
portraying the natural beauty around us. My art is
directly inspired by the Arboretum, my homies,
Maurice the Moose, the music of John Scofield and viewers like you. But don’t take my word for it. Oh yeah, music if fun, too. Have a crayontastic day!
