In October, smokers received a hit when a new law prevented them from smoking in the bars. Eventually, they may be prevented from smoking anywhere on campus as well.

At Yesterday’s meeting, Sen. Chris Beckstrand introduced a motion to pass a resolution that “encourages (the CSB campus) to become smoke-free by the fall of 2009.”

The motion sparked debate, with senators speaking out on both sides of the issue. Sen. Erin Moore and Ashley VerBurg directly opposed passage of the resolution, and many others expressed doubts and requested more information.

“I will not support this resolution,” Moore said. “That doesn’t mean I support smoking at all, but there are a lot of students on campus, and some smoke and some don’t. We have to respect the ones who don’t smoke, but we also have to respect those who do.”

Ultimately, the SBS decided to table the motion until next week’s meeting.

Talk of male faculty advisor

Last week, the SBS discussed the possibility to amending their by-laws to allow for the selection of a male faculty advisor. A new advisor will join the senate next year following the resignation of Karyl Daughters. The SBS is currently getting in touch with potential candidates, both male and female. The final decision, however, will fall to next year’s senate.

SBS keeps funding for SALD

The senate also passed a motion last week to support the department of Student Activities and Leadership Development. The motion places a line item in the SBS budget that gives a nine percent flat fee to the department from the student activity fees. SALD uses this money to fund their programming and ILCP courses.
