Amidst much debate, the St. Ben’s Senate narrowly voted down a resolution yesterday that would have limited all on-campus smoking to parking lots.

The resolution was an adapted version of the one introduced at last week’s meeting, which advocated a “smoke-free” campus by the fall of 2009.

Sen. Christen Beckstrand, who introduced the resolution, cited a survey which stated that 88 percent of college students prefer a smoke-free environment.

“We must represent the student body,” Beckstrand said.

Parking lots were incorporated into the resolution because they are easier to refer to as a designated location, Beckstrand said.

Sen. Erin Moore, who was opposed to the original resolution, showed strong support for the parking lot provision.

“I don’t agree with making this entire campus smoke-free, but (we need to keep smoking) away from doorways,” Moore said. “(The new resolution) is a nice compromise.”

But other senators, such as Tiffany de Leon, expressed doubt that the resolution would solve the issue at hand: enforcing the 25-foot policy created to keep cigarette smoke away from buildings.

“If people are having a problem with 25 feet, are they really going to follow the parking lot rule?” de Leon said. Senator Ashley Verburg agreed.

“If there is a problem with a current policy, maybe we should try to encourage the campus to enforce these rules instead of making new ones,” she said.

The resolution failed 7-6.

Vote allows male advisor

The SBS, in a unanimous vote, ratified its by-laws. Most notably, they approved an amendment allowing the SBS to choose a male faculty advisor. The SBS has not identified an advisor, but the amendment opens the door to the possibility of a male advisor next year.
