Unfortunate weather results in the cancellation of regatta for CSB/SJU. Practice begins at 6 a.m. and warm clothes are required because the ice on Lake Sagatagon has just melted. The CSB/SJU crew team is used to waking-up to endure a spring practice with similar conditions.

The crew club participates in two seasons: the fall, which consists of long races, and the spring, which consists of two kilometer races and 500-meter sprints.

Their final regatta was cancelled last Saturday due to the unexpected snowfall. This was not the only race cancelled this season due to bad weather.

Kevin Kingdon, the club’s president, remembers the regatta that should have taken place in Omaha,
Neb.

“Only a few went and tried to compete, but the weather did not cooperate,” Kingdon said.

This situation was all too familiar for members of this team. The weather wasn’t on their side for much of the season, according to Jeremy Graney, the commodore of the team and a sophomore at St. John’s.

“This spring season was a lot better than last year because of the great turn out, even though many of our practices were held indoor,” Graney said.

Graney was not the only one to notice the team getting larger.

“The team is growing really fast, and in the past year it has doubled,” Kingdon said. It’s always good to have new people.”

Even though the season came to an end, Graney will always remember the team breakfasts at Kingdon’s once a week after practice.

“(These breakfasts will be remembered for) watching Scooby-doo while eating breakfast,” Graney said. “Its pretty bad when you can name every episode.”

Although the weather made it difficult for the members of the crew team to have a regular season, they ended in high spirits and look forward to the fall season.
