"Cancer doesn't sleep, so neither do we." That's the motto of a new fundraising opportunity on campus this year called "Up ‘til Dawn."

The event is a student-run and student-led program.

The goal is to raise money for cancer treatment and research for St. Jude's Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.

"It's a minimal time commitment for how much you get out of it and for how much it helps St. Jude's," said CSB sophomore Mallarie Scherer.

Scherer is one of 11 executive members who meet once a week to help plan and coordinate the event.

She learned about the "Up til' Dawn" program during an involvement fair at the beginning of the school year.

According to the St. Jude's Web site, "Up til' Dawn" is hosted by more than 150 colleges and universities nationwide each year.

Funds raised help alleviate the hospital's daily operating costs of about $600,000.

To participate, students need to form teams of six and register before Nov. 14.

These teams will take part in individual fundraisers throughout the year if they choose, but the majority of fundraising will take place Dec. 8.

On that night, all teams will write 50 letters, asking for money from various people and organizations.

St. Jude's will provide all the materials and participants will receive a free T-shirt and water bottle.

On March 11, the teams will get to celebrate their fundraising efforts by staying up all night in the Old Gym at St. John's.

The event will include student bands, a hypnotist, espresso machines, poetry readings and a speech by a patient from St. Jude's.

"The goal is to bring students together to fight for a cause," Scherer said.
