The Record

On Monday night, students may have been confused by the long line extending from the Alumnae Hall into the lobby of the HCC.

CSB sophomores, however, knew exactly what was happening. They flocked to "An Evening at the Spa," sponsored by the St. Ben's Senate and Residential Life.

Soothing music floated through the room, which was dimly lit with soft lights and candles. Round tables adorned with black and white tablecloths and rose petals were set up around the room.

The SBS went to great lengths to offer CSB sophomores a night of free pampering. The night was somewhat of a consolation prize for the housing switch from Brian Hall to Dominica Hall that affected some sophomore Bennies.

After learning about the housing problems facing the CSB campus due to the large first-year class, CSB Senate Underclass Representative Bridget Sitzer decided that she wanted to do something for the class to compensate the women.

Sitzer came up with the idea for a spa night, because she knew that it would be a nice break from the stress of classes and life.

"This event ended up being an event for sophomores, because they don't really have any event just for them," Sitzer said. "Hopefully this will be a new sophomore tradition."

Sophomore women said they appreciated the senate's efforts.

"I thought it was an awesome idea. It was different and interesting that they were doing it just for us," sophomore Natalie Arel said.

Many Bennies were grateful for the chance to relax for a night.

"It gives sophomores time to relax and get away from homework," sophomore Danielle Di Fabio said. "Any type of relaxation is a good thing."

The spa included free manicures, massages and waxing. An invitation sent out prior to the event allowed one service per person.

Three manicure tables were positioned around the room, where students could indulge in some TLC for their hands. Manicures were provided by the Aurora Wellness Center, Joseph's Hair and Tanning and Michelle Kenric Hair Studio and Spa.

The massages were provided by Hair and Body Works and Medelberg Family Chiropractic. Bennies were led by men and women in white lab coats to special massage chairs where they spent a relaxing 15 minutes.

Sophomores could get their eyebrows waxed quickly by professionals from Hair and Body Works.

The three main services quickly produced hour-long waits, during which sophomore women could receive free paraffin hand-waxes, make jewelry, sip tea and dip all sorts of treats into a chocolate fountain. Students could also get two hair extensions from Aurora Wellness Center for $5.

The night was considered a success by the many Bennies who attended.

"It exceeded my expectations. It was fabulous," sophomore Catherine Burke said.

"An Evening at the Spa" was a sophomore-only event, but SBS Upperclass Representative Rachel Dougherty said that the senate is looking into a formal dance for upperclass students next semester.
