Vanbruggen places 13th as Johnnies return to nationals SJU runners place 5th at Central Regional, while Wurm qualifies for nationals for CSB Editorial staff
For the third time in her four-year career, Leah Wurm earned a berth in the Division III national meet. This year, however, the St. John's cross country team will be joining her. The Johnnies placed fifth at last weekend's NCAA Division III Central Regional meet in Waverly, Iowa and gained a berth in this Saturday's meet in Delaware, Ohio. A fifth place MIAC finish left the Johnnies disappointed, but another fifth place finish in regionals made up for it. "Conference is for bragging rights but regionals actually means something," sophomore Mitch Vanbruggen said. "Before the season, we thought we had a shot at winning the conference," said Vanbruggen, who finished 13th at regionals with the best individual time on the team. "I think we needed to become more concerned about running against ourselves and not worry about other teams." For the Blazers, Wurm returns to the national meet after a 14th place finish last year. Wurm finished sixth place overall with a time of 22:57.45. First-year Maggie Donahue was the second CSB runner to cross the line with a time of 24:45.40 (63rd place). CSB took 10th out of 23 teams to complete their season. |
