Healthy Bites

Holiday treats don't have to spoil healthy appetites or waistlines

The holidays are just around the corner. Thoughts of home cooking, mashed potatoes, gravy and pumpkin pie dance through our heads.

It is acceptable to splurge for the holidays, but when we binge on unhealthy foods we get in trouble. Don't deprive yourself of treats, but limit yourself to a one or two such as ice cream or brownies.

Be careful of mindless eating when you're curled up on the couch watching TV or studying.

Let your mind enjoy the food. Slowing down your eating will give your brain time to register feelings of fullness.

Eating foods like fruits and vegetables, which are full of fiber, create the same feeling.

"The secret is feeling full on the fewest number of calories," said Dawn Jackson Blatner, R.D., a spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association.

Keep these small thoughts in mind, and you'll be able to take pleasure in the wonderful foods as well as keep off those holiday pounds.
