Not even another strong shooting night from Ryan Lieser could put away Concordia-Moorhead.

The St. John's junior made five 3-pointers and scored 19 points, but the Cobbers (1-0 MIAC, 1-2 overall) outscored the Johnnies (0-1 MIAC, 1-1 overall) 13-4 in the final four minutes to pull away with a 71-64 win Wednesday night at Sexton Arena.

Lieser, who transferred to

St. John's after playing for two years at North Dakota State, led the Johnnies in scoring, making 5-of-12 from 3-point range.

The last time a St. John's player made five 3-pointers was last season — a span of 11 games — when wing Matt Ohme made five against Gustavus in a seven-point loss.

It's a 3-point trend that Lieser carried over from the team's season-opener when he hit 3-of-6 from beyond the arc in a win over Wisconsin-River Falls.

A trio of Concordia players spoiled his night, however. Sophomore Luke Linz, a 6-foot-6 forward, scored 20 points and had six rebounds, and senior guard Keith Eckhoff added 19 points for to power Concordia to a second-half rally.

But it was Mark Dixon who finished off the Johnnies.

St. John's stayed ahead of the Cobbers for most of the second half, but with the score tied 60-60 with four minutes left, the senior forward went off against the Johnnies.

Dixon made 7-of-8 free throws and scored all nine of his points as Concordia pulled away with the win.

Ohme finished with 14 points and three assists for St. John's. Junior post Craig Schafer added 12 points and 10 rebounds.
