Mission Statement | How We Began | A Prayer to End Abortion

CSB/SJU Students for Life: Mission

CSB/SJU Students for Life is committed to defending and acting as advocates for vulnerable humans who cannot defend themselves in addition to supporting women who are faced with crisis pregnancies. The primary focus of Students for Life is to promote a culture of life on our campuses and within the community.  The club will seek to educate the CSB/SJU community about the value of all human life from conception to natural death through campus wide education, dialogue, volunteering, and teaching others how to seek and apply life-giving solutions to the social issues of our time.

How we began...

It was January 22, 2004, the 31st anniversary of the Roe v. Wade tragedy.  There was a tiny prayer service in the basement of the abbey church.   Afterwards four CSB students and a few members of the surrounding community decided that this issue needed a voice on these campuses, and Students For Life was born.

SFL's first semester was a very busy one for its members.   SFL met every week, and managed to write a constitution, become an officially recognized student organization, secure a small amount of startup funding, and gain about 20 new members from both campuses in the process!

But the meetings were much more than official club formation business.  Most of the meetings were spent learning and discussing life issues.   We had a CSB student who counseled at a local Crisis Pregnancy Center share her experiences with us.  A number of us attended a pro-life gathering in St. Cloud, where after Mass, Ann Marie Cosgrove, of the Silent No More Campaign gave a moving speech.  Some of our members attended a seminar and even a mini course on the Theology of the Body.   And as a finale to the year, our last meeting included pizza for all and 2 very passionate speakers from LifeVoice.

It was a great semester, but we've got a lot more plans, and can't wait for this year!

A Prayer to End Abortion

Lord God, I thank you today for the gift of my life,
And for the lives of all my brothers and sisters.
I know there is nothing that destroys more life than abortion,
Yet I rejoice that you have conquered death by the Resurrection of your Son

I am ready to do my part in ending abortion.
Today I commit myself
Never to be silent,
Never to be passive,
Never to be forgetful of the unborn.

I commit myself to be active in the pro-life movement,
And never to stop defending life
Until all my brothers and sisters are protected,
And our nation once again becomes
A nation with liberty and justice
Not just for some, but for all,
Through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
