- The Ethics of
Belief, ed. A.J. Burger (1994). Nineteenth-century discussion of when, or
whether, belief is legitimate. What role has evidence to play? Includes
complete text of "The Ethics of Belief," by William Kingdon Clifford,
and of William James's famous essay "The Will to Believe." Often
excerpted in philosophy of religion anthologies. Treat yourself and read the

- Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification. Lutheran
World Federation and Roman Catholic Church. Approved unanimously by the member
bodies of the LWF. Formally agreed to by both parties on Reformation Sunday, 31
October 1999.

the Trumpet Against the Monstrous Regiment of Women (1558). [135K]. A
classic of shrill misogyny. His political situation had something to do with
the argument.

- An Essay in
Aid of a Grammar of Assent (1870). A brief quote gives the flavor of the
text: "Deductions have no power of persuasion. The heart is commonly
reached, not through the reason, but through the imagination, by means of direct
impressions, by the testimony of facts and events."
- On
Consulting the Faithful in Matters of Doctrine (1859). Newman's thought was
that the sensus fidelium can be a true barometer of orthodoxy.
He points in particular to the Arian controversy, on which he was an expert.
