Arkansas Traveler

It is virtually obligatory to play "Arkansas Traveler" at fiddle conventions. The tune is a good finger exercise for mandolinists as well. If performed in C, as here, it uses all four courses of strings and forces you to make some pretty quick jumps between the top and bottom course, and between the first and fifth fret.

"Arkansas Traveler" first appeared in print in 1847. But the tune may have already been traditional before this attempt to further popularize it.

If you like, you can hear a MIDI file of "Arkansas Traveler".
