Ellacombe must be in the running for most hymns set to one tune. I know of:
My favorite of this list is the first, Hail to the Lord's Anointed set to the tune of Ellacombe. Terrific lyrics, bang-up ending.
The tune Ellacombe in its present form first appeared in 1868, in the Appendix to Hymns Ancient and Modern, but it is an adaptation of an older tune--Ave Maria, klarer und lichter Morgenstern--which appeared in Gesangbuch der Herzogl. Wirtembergischen Katholischen Hofkappelle in 1784.
I have seen sheet music for this tune in A, A flat, B flat, and, I think, D. Three sharps, maybe. But four flats? Are they nuts? I have transposed it to C, which should be in a range that ordinary folks can sing and play.
If you like, you can hear a MIDI file of "Ellacombe".
