Following on the second way, St. Dominic would discipline himself in the popular style of the 12th century. He did this to remind himself of the seriousness of sin, and to keep him on the path as a preacher of the Word of God.
As a prayer he would recite Psalm 17, saying, "O God, your discipline has set me towards my goal . . . " (v. 36).
