This interdisciplinary major entails the study of the structure, synthesis, properties and regulation of biomolecules in cells and organisms. Complex cellular, organ, and organismal processes are examined through the study of the complex molecular networks that comprise and regulate them. As such, biochemistry has strong components from the fields of both biology and chemistry. This major is especially appropriate for those who intend to pursue careers in any of the medical fields, graduate education in biochemistry, medical research or employment in the biotechnology industry.
Required Courses: (70 credits)
BIOL 115, 116, 311, 318, plus one additional 300 level BIOL course

BIOL 200 or CHEM 320 (1credit)
BIOL 371 or 372 or CHEM 350 or 351 (1 credit)
Special Requirements:
Senior majors are required to give a seminar presentation on their laboratory or library research and to take a comprehensive exam.
Minor: (None)
Courses: (BCHM)
BCHM 321 Biochemistry I. (see description under CHEM 331) (4)BCHM 322 Biochemistry II (4)
The regulation of metabolism from a chemical and enzymatic point of view and the integration of biological events will be explored. Mechanisms of cell and organ communication by signal transduction pathways will be investigated. Finally, the chemical events that coordinate and regulate biological processes will be discussed.
