Help Me!
Welcome to the St. John's and St. Ben's Unix network. This leg of the overall network is Administrated by Jim Gramke and is frequenly updated and improved with the help of the Computer Science and Chemistry departments.

These pages were designed to familiarize you with the Unix system which is usually new to many people. There will be basic help as well as more advanced information. These guides can teach you most of what you need to know to operate this system, so hit and miss learning is no longer required.

There are three Unix labs supported on these campuses:
  • Room 217 of the St. John's Science Center
  • Room 233 of the St. Ben's Ardolf Science Building
  • Room 114 of the St. John's Science Center (Physics Lab)
  • Room 201 of the St. John's Science Center (which is reserved for senior Comp Sci research)
Each contains a mix of computers, but the standard workstations are all Silicon Graphics machines. These are powerful workstations which are commonly used in industry to create special effect magic for movie purposes. Whether you sit down at an older Indigo or a newer Indy, you have your own customizable account which is yours to use.

Each lab is open to the public during the day unless there is a class that needs it. After 4 PM they are all operated by TA's of the Comp Sci dep't and have posted schedules.

Use the menu headings on the left to choose the topic you would like to read about, and enjoy the system!
