MASS SPECTROMETRY

Another important instrument for laboratory and research use is the mass spectrometer. In the Fall of 1997, we installed a new Varian Saturan 2000 Ion Trap Mass Spectrometer with a 3800 GC. This new instrument allows for samples to be introduced through a gas chromatograph. Solid, liquid and gas samples can easily be analyzed. These capabilities allow students to analyze reaction products from the organic lab, research synthesis products as well as solid materials from the inorganic lab. The instrument has enhanced sensitivity which allows for easy analysis of environmental samples.
