St. Joe's version of Minneapolis' Warehouse District won't be popping up anytime soon.
The abandoned mill in St. Joe, which developers bought in June to create student housing and stores, has encountered some obstacles.
Construction has halted because the developers are resolving parking issues with the city, said Bob Adamson, one of the people behind the renovations.
"We're right in the middle of this," Adamson said. "We're hoping this will be resolved by the end of the month."
The building was originally expected to open by next year.
But construction can't begin until the parking issues are resolved with the city of St. Joseph, which is requesting that the developers find more on-site parking for the building.
Adamson said that he predicts the building won't open for student housing until January or fall 2007.
"Until the parking scenerio is resolved, we don't want to make commitments to anyone," he said. "It's going to be great when it gets open."
He said he's already had students express interest in the apartments.
The developers detailed plans for the 30,000 square foot building include an ice cream parlor, outdoor dining, bars and restaurants among the student housing in the building and two silos.
When they get closer to opening, Adamson said, they'll advertise more for housing.
For now, if students are interested in the mill apartments, they can contact Adamson at (651) 387-6262 or btadamsonwbl@aol.com.
