Students lend a hand to Gulf Coast

The Record
St. John's Campus Ministry is traveling to to Mobile, Ala. to aid in hurricane relief.
Social Justice Director Shaun Crumb is leading 25 CSB/SJU students on the 10-day volunteer mission to Alabama. It is the first time the group has trekked there. In previous years, they've volunteered in Chimobte, Peru, where a trip is also planned later this year.
When deciding where to go, Crumb thought of the Gulf Coast, where there is obvious need.
"We're just trying to give back to other people," he said.
The group will be helping with hurricane relief by working in shelters and doing construction.
"The response was huge," Crumb said. "It's awesome to see them give up some time over their break."
Students are paying $150 for the 11-day trip where they will stay at a retreat center.
"It will be an experience," said sophomore Tim Kennealy. He said the group will split the drive into two days, stopping first in Missouri.
He and sophomore Nicole Kessler said they're excited to help, even if it means giving up part of their break.
"We all have been blessed. … I think we need to do something for people there that don't have all those blessings," Kennealy said.
Kessler said she's heard details about the hurricane-hit areas from her dad, who is an insurance adjuster who assessed damage in the area.
"My dad would come back with stories of water up to the windows of houses," she said. "I think it's a good way to be able to help just a little bit."
