Work to give CSB a more social atmosphere

"Hey, there's a sweet dance at O'Connell's tonight! Everyone's going to be there!"

This is something we haven't heard by CSB or SJU students.

We can't deny that events at the Pub are more popular to students than events at

St. Ben's.

On an average weekend night, St. John's is much more happening than any one place at CSB.

The only place hopping at

St. Ben's on the weekend is the bus stop.

Let's think about this.

Bennies are known for ridding the Link over to St. John's, while their fellow Johnnies eagerly await their arrival.

This turns the poor CSB campus into a ghost town.

The only occasional visitors are students walking to and from St. Joe.

Obviously St. John's has more of a social atmosphere.

While we love SJU and hang out there often, we would love to see more students enjoying St. Ben's.

St. John's and St. Ben's should be seen as equals because we share one education.

Why not share experiences?

We are here for the same purpose gaining an education while enjoying the freedom and social life that completes the college experience.

St. Ben's does have some really great events that happen on weekdays and weekends.

One event that fills O'Connell's one Wednesday a month is Bingo, which is put on by Student Activities and Leadership Development.

The Health Advocates always get a large crowd at their annual Night to Fight Cancer.

On the flip side, there are events at CSB that have little or no attendance.

And even when there is attendance, it's mostly Bennies.

One reason we came up with in determining why the Pub brings more attendance than O'Connell's is that O'Connell's is known for its academic and relaxing atmosphere.

The Pub is a more social and active setting that parallels the bar and party scenes.

We can see this difference in the events that are held in each venue.

O'Connell's has Open Mic Night, comedians and Bingo, where you are casually sitting with your friends, being entertained.

At the Pub, there are events like Battle of the Bands, dances and Happy Hour, where students are more actively socializing by moving around.

It might come down to taking initiative to enjoy the great events that happen on the

St. Ben's campus.

Try doing something that you haven't done before.

Bennies, invite your Johnnie friends to St. Ben's.

Johnnies, make an effort to socialize at St. Ben's.

OK.

Why do so many students hang out at St. John's?

The gender expectations that our campus community holds allow men more room for relaxation and hanging out.

We often see Johnnies playing video games or watching Comedy Central, waiting for the party to come to them.

Women on our campus are expected to be more responsible and active in their social life.

They are the ones who are expected to plan and initiate their weekend trip to SJU.

Let's try and reverse these expectations.

We challenge ourselves, and all of you, to try something new and break your routine.

Let's make St. Ben's a more happening place.
