Awards January 2005 The Record won five awards in the 2003-04 Minnesota Newspaper Association contest. The Record won first place out of nine entries in the general excellence category. In a tab listing the winners, a judge wrote, The Record is a "well-designed and easy-to-read newspaper. However, what really set it apart was the feature following the disappearance of Joshua Guimond." The feature "A Presence Remains" ran on April 29, 2004, two weeks before Guimond would have graduated. The Record also won first place out of seven entries for best use of photography. The winning entry included the Sept. 23, 2004 issue featuring President Bush's campaign visit to St. Cloud. The Record had three individual second place winners. Former editor in chief Austin DeCock was second out of 42 entries in column writing for his Oct. 16, 2003 column "Unplanned pregnancy." DeCock was also part of the editorial board which placed second out of 12 entries for its Feb. 19, 2004 editorial on mass e-mails. Other board members included former editors Tony Capecchi, Tim Flagstad and Amber Streff. Former sports editor Brad Arendt placed second out of 27 entries for best sports action/feature photo featuring David Meacham rowing in the Sept. 9, 2004 issue. October 2004 The Record won 10 awards at the Minnesota Private College Newspaper Conference on Saturday, October 23rd, 2004 at St. John's. The contest was judged by reporters, photographers and editors of the St. Cloud Times, Star Tribune and Pioneer Press. The Record took home first place for Best Overall Newspaper, Best Web Site and Best Page 1 Design. Chris Lusvardi and Kristen Nowak won first place for Best News Story--on-deadline for their coverage of "Violence erupts at Rocori High" on Sept. 25, 2003. Tony Capecchi won Best Opinion Column for "You know you're back at CSB/SJU when…" on Sept. 2, 2004. Joe Mechtenberg won Best Sports Story "Assistant coaches hang around to help Gagliardi" on Nov. 10, 2003 and Best Sports Column "Twins Cold in Hot Stove" on Jan. 22, 2004. Zach Bauman won for Best News Photo of his photo of Carl Johnson at Morehouse College on Feb. 5, 2004. Brad Arendt won for Best Sports Photo of Dave Meecham rowing on Sept. 9, 2004 and Best Features Story "Meet the man behind the memory" about Fr. Don Talafous on Feb. 19, 2004.
